The enigmatic Shoji DeVille suddenly turns up at Nathan Never’s house, asking for his help to fight the ‘demons’ which could bring about the destruction of the world. Before he leaves, Shoji gives Nathan an ancient mask which will enable him to tell human beings and monsters apart. But when he puts it on as a joke, he sees Legs Weaver with a devil’s face. Has the battle between angels and devils already started?

David, Nathan Never’s friend who is a vet, comes into possession of Mushi, a little dragon made in the laboratory. The excrement of this creature contains a mutation agent which makes the grass grow extremely high. And so David asks Nathan to discover where it comes from... Thanks to one of Sigmund’s forays into cyberspace, the Alfa agents find out that the creator of Mushi is Professor Masato Odaka, who has retired to a small island in the Pacific. But when Nathan goes to the island he finds himself in the grips of the dinosaurs which inhabit a valley…

Nathan is blackmailed by Ash and Leonid – who kidnapped his friend Penelope Peabody – into going to the west coast.
