The American army has restyled and reorganized a specialized contingent that was already in existence but is now turning into a select corps: the Marines! The Spirit with the Hatchet acts as a guide for a group of soldiers who have to go to a training camp on the shores of Lake Michigan, precisely the area where Zagor himself happens to be going, on the tracks of a band of indians who’ve committed atrocious raids. But the band of indians is headed by a white man: a cruel person – an old acquaintance of some of the Marines. A man that the Spirit with the Hatchet has to confront together with a handful of soldiers who’ve been left without a commander. A wild and rugged landscape is the scenario for a story that unfolds amid bravery and cowardice, heroism and military discipline, until the moment of a final showdown which seems to be devoid of all hope for Zagor and the Marines…
