While the infernal abysses open up to engulf Paco Cardenas, his brother José, trampled to death by a herd of demented cattle, begs forgiveness, as he breathes his last, from Padre Matías, the priest the pair of them had beaten the brains out of when trying to steal the treasure of mission Santa Cruz. Some time later, near Nogales, the former scalp hunter Paul Balder – known as El Carnicero – enlarges his ranch by getting a band of hooded figures to chase away the honest cattle ranchers whose lands bordered onto his own. Tex and Carson pass themselves off as the new owners of one of the farms “liberated” by Balder’s thugs.
