The curtain also falls on don Benavides, Black Dragons accomplice: he dies on his ranch overcome by the pards and by the Mexican federales. A while later, in a saloon in Abilene, Tex finds Damned Dick Dayton again, his comrade-in-arms at the time of the Civil War: the two recall their adventures, beginning the story from when they were simple cowboys. Having saved the herd from the clutches of the Southerners, Dick and Tex helped a unionist spy who was being tailed by a confederate patrol. When the soldier died, the two friends took it upon themselves to take the precious military information to the Northerners in his stead.
