The vile mind behind the plot wanted Tex on the gibbet, not in prison! Therefore, the rascal attempts to intercept the stage-coach that is transferring the ranger to the cooler, but the three pards and thirty Navajos foaming with rage at seeing their sachem as a prisoner have joined the escort. So they bribe Murdock, head of the jailers in the infernal penitentiary of Vicksburg: the mug, who has the cowardly alcoholic director in the palm of his hand with libations of whisky, offers Tex a stay with great attractions – beatings and starvation – until such time as he can get Tex murdered, during an escape, by the brutish Clem and his Indians.
