Young Jimmy, the son of a Boston merchant, has been kidnapped by the marauding river buccaneers who are now hiding among the trappers up at the fort built by Kirk Weeler, an old friend of Zagor’s. The Spirit with the Hatchet manages not only to track down the bandit’s hideout and locate the cave on the mountainside where the boy is being held prisoner, but also to set him free, together with Cico… But meanwhile Kirk himself gets locked up by his own men inside a shed at Fort Arrow: the aim is to lure Zagor back inside the fenced-off enclosure, and capture him!
