When young Pat Wilding had not yet become Zagor he was saved from death by a trapper called Kirk Wheeler. Many years later, the Spirit with the Hatchet bumps into his old friend again, and finds he’s built a small fort on the border of Indian land. It’s now the base for a group of fur trappers headed by Kirk himself. Zagor is looking into the activities of a band of marauders who attack barges on the Darkwood rivers and have kidnapped a boy to extort a ransom. The attacks appear to be the work of the indians, but something raises the suspicion that a bunch of the old trapper’s buddies might be in cahoots with the kidnappers…
