After reaching New Orleans on the tracks of Velasquez, Zagor and Cico can’t prevent him from boarding a ship that’s heading for Veracruz. But the Spirit with the Hatchet finds out that the pirate Jean Lafitte has been captured by the Mexican authorities while he was smuggling arms along the coasts of Yucatan, and he risks being strung up on the gallows together with the whole lot of his crew. And so Zagor decides to set off for Mexico with Denise Lafitte, to help her save the life of her father (who himself once saved Zagor’s), but at the same time Zagor has no intention of giving up the hunt for Velasquez.
