Cannonaded with grape-shot and shot to death: this is the atrocious trap laid for chief Juan Josè’s unarmed Apaches by the evil alcalde of Santa Rita and by the soldiers of the garrison, accomplices of a band of scalp hunters led by the infamous James Johnson! But some Indians – such as the mimbreño Mangas Coloradas – manage to save themselves and sound the alarm: luckily, Aquila della Notte’s diplomacy calms the souls of the sachems in a rally organized by Cochise, averting an Indian war! And thus the pards raze the Mexican town, origin of the slaughter, to the ground with fire and dynamite.
