Cochises’s Apaches save the pards from the fiere Lupi Rossi and torch what remains of the blood-thirsty Paul Balder’s ranch with burning arrows, thereby avenging the Indians killed by the swine when he was a scalp-hunter. Trapped by the fire, El Carnichero has no other option than to shoot himself in the head. Months later, on arriving in Washington to obtain assurances from Ely Parker about the boundaries of the Navajo reservation, Tex and Carson bump into a plot against the presidential candidate Hayes, an honest politician who is making many of the scoundrels in the capital quake in their boots.
