Badly wounded, Lucero burns his ranch to the ground, and sets off for the San Xavier mission. The monks give assistance to the dying man, and then the Indian, bent over the grave of Father Michele whom he himself had slain, begs for forgiveness! The following summer, the pards stop in San Francisco to call on Tom Delvin and Mike Stacy: but the menacing Diamond Jim, who runs thousands of unlawful activities in the city, resolves to avenge his brother – who was killed by the rangers during a previous clean-up in Frisco – by having Kit Willer kidnapped at the hands of Captain “Black beard” Drake, who loads him on his sailing ship, the Black Shark.
