Tex, Carson, Kit, and Tiger Jack attempt a difficult mediation between Black Bear's Arapaho, the army, and Mr. Jefferson's hunters to prevent a horse, "Son of the Wind," from being captured. But the negotiation is rendered impossible by Major Duncan of Fort Stanley — instead of aiming to prevent the capture of the beast and avoid new tensions with the Indians, he seeks to put his hands on the beautiful creature.
