They were christened as warriors on the same day. They are a Cheyenne and a Skidi Pawnee - sworn enemies, therefore; but Colpo Coraggioso and Cavallo Bianco – these are their names – have a strange kinship formed of an identical sense of honor and courage. This is manifested, years later, during a tense and complex peace conference, whose participants include not just the Pawnees and their allies, but also a delegation of Navajos headed by Tex and Tiger Jack, Ben Lushbaugh, the valiant indian agent of the Pawnee reservation, the army and the combative assemblage composed of the tribes that have joined forces in a federation with the Cheyennes. The speeches and proclamations are, however, followed by war-mongering actions on both sides, and the climate, at the confluence of the Loup Fork and the Platte, where agent Lushbaugh lives, rapidly becomes red-hot. Danger is escalating inexorably, and for the Dolon family, the settlers Tex has escorted this far, the journey to the west seems doomed to turn into an utter catastrophe...
