After the inglorious end of the bounty killer, Chase, escaped in vain from the Yampa Fork trading post to seek safety among Piccolo Lupo’s Apaches whom he supplied with arms, the pards and the survivors of the stagecoach for Tucson tenaciously drive back the Native Americans until the cavalry arrives. The following spring, Colonel Jim Brandon of the Redcoats sends Gros-Jean to recruit Tex and Carson: Soapy Smith, a great ne’er-do-well, domineers with criminal methods in Skagway, a town full of gold diggers, “no man’s land” between Canada and the United States.
