While tidying up his apartment preparatory to moving home, Nick finds a letter addressed to him and dating from six months earlier, which had never been opened. The sender is Lorna Butler, the former lover of Nick’s deceased father. In it, the woman asks for help in discovering who murdered her young daughter, a sister the officer never knew. Nick learns that Lorna too has died in the meantime, and so he rushes to Northport, where the woman lived, to ferret out the murderer…
