Having discovered that the patient admitted to Cook Hospital under the name of John Smith is really his old enemy Ned Mace, Nathan, together with Doctor Duchateau, is attacked by Krazykat, a truck-driving murderer in the pay of Professor Hicks. At the same time Ned Mace, subjected to experiments by Hicks, shows intense E.S.P. activity coming into telepathic contact with Ann Never who is trying to reach him.
