Legs Weaver goes along to Calexico with Jack Kahio so as to bring help to Sheila, an old friend of Jack’s and the proprietress of the Esmeralda Casino. Calexico, built out in the desert, is a sort of new Las Vegas, the capital of night life (which is in fact the only life possible, since daytime temperatures soar to 50 ºC !), where fortunes wax and wane and where, depending on the luck of the game and the quirks of destiny, you can go make and lose a fortune, go from rags to riches and back to rags again. The jackpot is huge and there’re likely to be fabulous winnings all round, and yet someone is trying to prevent Sheila from playing her hand…
