The Urons have buried the hatchet for two springs by now, but old Puck-Jones is too much of an expert to be wrong when he claims that he’s emerged unscathed from their attack. And Mark confirms that all signs point to the Urons having taken up arms again – the evidence is the arrow he finds thrust in the back of the courier who’s just left Fort Independence. But why have the Urons infringed the alliance agreement with the patriots? Why are they besieging Fort Independence together with the Redcoats? The truth can only be unveiled by Winega, the sachem’s daughter, so Mark can’t do anything but watch over the safety of the young squaw if he wants to follow General Washington’s orders and save the whole garrison quartered in the besieged outpost.
