The treacherous innkeeper betrays for profit. Trevor, the patriot, betrays out of fear. If double-dealing has many faces, abnegation has only one. In spite of his betrayal and the presence of the Redcoats, Trevor discovers a way to expiate his guilt with Mark’s help and finds in extreme sacrifice redemption for himself and safety for the patriots of the region. Captain Stanley from the American army is rigidly devoted to hunting down the English officer Patrick Montrose. And he pursues his purpose even too single-mindedly for a simple military question. At least, that is Mark’s opinion, and as things turn out, Mark eventually learns about an ancient and appalling tragedy.
