One of the escaped convicts who've staged a breakout from Waterwall penitentiary, on the border between Georgia and Florida, happens to be an old adversary of Zagor's, "Bimbo" Sullivan, who is thirsting for revenge even more than before. But the escapees also include Elias Duff, a mentally retarded convict who was sentenced for a crime he perhaps didn't commit. The sister of this unfortunate guy makes her way, escorted by the Spirit with the Hatchet, to the penitentiary to call on the director, Bryce, and deliver a request for a new hearing, but Elias's getaway puts the lid on the whole plan. Meanwhile, a band of man-hunting indians have launched themselves on the tracks of the fugitives: these indians are in the pay of Bryce and are headed by Quanah...
