Derford, in Vermont, could be a beautifully quiet and peaceful community if it weren’t for a terrible burden weighing heavily on its destiny: the disappearance of no fewer than five little children! A Hungarian immigrant, widely held to be a witch, is blamed – perhaps too hastily – for what has happened, but Zagor, appealing to some faint residue of rationality, manages to obtain a suspension of the lynching just as it’s about to be put into action.
