Torrebianca is a village in the lower reaches of Parma county, on the banks of the River Po. As he tries to find out how much truth there may be in an old legend, Harlan discovers that the inhabitants of Torrebianca are obsessed by the danger of the river, which centuries ago flooded and wrecked the entire old settlement. Ever since then, as soon as the first mists arrive in the fall, wistful songs of bygone days come wafting over from the opposite bank and, at night, some see the ghostly houses of the vanished township, appearing like a mirage.
