During the Civil War, the Yankee officer, John Walcott, had taken a trunk of gold from the confederates, saving the life of his cousin, Leslie, a gallooned confederate. But then the enemy had captured John, and since the box recovered by the gray coats only contained stones, he had been sent to the Anderville prison camp to loosen his tongue. The unionists, certain that John had hidden the ingots, charged Tex with freeing him. Under false disguise, accompanied by the black man, Tom, Willer had to overcome a thousand perils, risking ending up being shot as a spy.
