El Carnicero, or “The Butcher”: this is how Manning, the knavish fresh water captain, is nicknamed. An accomplice of Kenny Spangler’s (a ruffian from Freeport and head of a band of cattle plunderers in Texas), El Carnicero transports the herds stolen along the Brazos with his boat to a small island surrounded by sharks, where they are cut into pieces in the middle of an infernal stench of dead meat! Having swept away the band of butchers, the pards are entrusted with keeping the Wolf Band in check.
