Proteus has no escape: the diabolical master of disguises had masqueraded as Tex in his raids, but Willer has proven his innocence and is immediately hot on the heels of the villain. Singled out on a train and chased through the carriages, Proteus plummets from a bridge into the waters of a river. In Little Rock, some time afterwards, Tex and Carson investigate the disappearance of an old friend, Randy Brandt, who had sent a letter calling for their help: some mysterious murderers take pot shots at the rangers, and then kill a witness, who dies writing the word “pig” in the dust...
