While coming back to Darkwood, Zagor and Cico arrive to Winnfield, a small town in South Carolina. Here they find out that their friend Gambit is detained in Sheriff’s Atkinson lockup cell, waiting to be taken to the gallows. Over the head of the beautiful adventurer hangs a death sentence, after she was found near the body of a recently killed man, Clive Howland. Gambit says she doesn’t remember a thing about that night because she was utterly drunk. Convinced of his friend’s innocence, Zagor decides to clear her from this charge, finding the real murderer... someone who framed her with a sneaky scheme!
