Walter Venturi and the great Belzoni

Artist Walter Venturi spent some time in Egypt this summer to make a bust to celebrate the life of Giovanni Battista Belzoni, the real life archaeologist who found the Abu Simbel temple 200 years ago.

In the weeks between August and September, Walter Venturi has been in Luxor, Egypt, to collaborate with the Institute for Italian Culture of Cairo and the Tourist Guide Association of Luxor in making a bust celebrating the great Belzoni, the archaeologist who discovered the Abu Simbel temple some two hundred years ago. Four years ago, Venturi was the mind (and arm) behind the book Il grande Belzoni, dedicated to this fascinating historical figure.

Here is a gallery of pictures of the various stages of the work on the bust.
